Publishing Party!

We have been working VERY hard the past month on writing "How-To" stories! Each child made a list of things where they were the "expert." They then wrote step by step directions/instructions of how to complete or make this certain activity. After creating several stories, every child made one "published" copy of a "How-To" story. They edited their work and then re-wrote the stories in their neatest, nicest handwriting. To help celebrate these published copies (we had them "bound" to be more professional), we had our very own Publishing Party! The students were able to read their stories to one another and leave comments in one another's comments pages in his or her book. We had some VERY proud authors! It was a great day to celebrate the firsties amazing writing!

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

We learned about the importance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. this past week. We learned how students used to be segregated and how people would judge one another based on skin color. To help teach the idea that even though people may look different on the outside we still have similar "inside" feelings; we cracked 2 different colored eggs. (One brown egg and one white egg.) The students were shocked to see that the two eggs that looked so different on the outside, looked exactly the same on the inside. It was so sweet to hear each of the students talk about differences and embrace these differences and to accept one another for each individual's unique self!

Before we broke open the eggs.

After cracking each egg open. They look the same on the inside!
